Jay Walljasper
Jay Walljasper is an American writer and speaker. He explores how new ideas in urban planning, tourism, community development, sustainability, politics and culture can improve our lives as well as the world.
Walljasper is the author of All That We Share: A Field Guide to the Commons (2011), The Great Neighborhood Book (2007) and Visionaries: People and Ideas to Change Your Life (2001).
He is editor at On the Commons, a Senior Fellow at Project for Public Space, a Fellow of the Sabo Center for Citizenship & Learning at Augsburg College, and a senior associate at the urban affairs consortium Citiscope. He writes the Town Square column for the PPS e-newsletter ‘Making Places’, The Ecopolitan blog about green cities for the National Geographic Green Guide, a column about city life for Shareable.net, and reports on sustainable tourism for the National Geographic Traveler. He was the editorial director and editor of Utne Reader, executive editor of Netherlands-based Ode magazine, and a travel editor at Better Homes & Gardens.
He has examined positive urban initiatives in places like Portland, inner-city Boston, Copenhagen, and the Twin Cities for a series, “What Works?” in The Nation magazine (1997-2000). His articles have appeared in numerous publications.
