Sponsors of the then 10-month-old economic experiment BerkShares held a community festival to celebrate the success of the program. In the week previous to the festival, local banks selling BerkShares reached a total of $900,000 in deposits. Since notes were sold to consumers at participating banks for 90 cents each, the milestone indicated that one million BerkShares had been sold. Entertainment was provided by Terry a la Berry & Friends, Quintessential, Cabuca Jazz, and the BTU’s Merchants were on site with food, gifts, crafts, and info about their businesses.
Bill McKibben was the keynote speaker for this event. The time is Sunday, July 15, 2007, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., on the front lawn of the Searles Castle, home of the John Dewey Academy, Main Street, Great Barrington, Masssachusetts. Sponsored by Berkshire Grown, The Orion Society, and WBCR 97.7 FM.
