“The most effective means of local self-determination would be a well-developed local economy based upon the use and protection of local resources, including local human intelligence and skills.
Local resources have little local value when they are industrially produced or extracted and shipped out. They become far more valuable when they are developed, produced, processed, and marketed by, and first of all to, the local people – when, that is, they support, and are supported by, a local economy.”
– Wendell Berry In his address to the 2013 Annual Meeting of Kentuckians for the Commonwealth
Inspired by the foresight of visionary advocates for a more localized economic system like Wendell Berry, the reemerging bioregional movement is fostering the skills needed for a new generation to create vibrant, equitable, and regenerative communities where they call home. Samantha Power and Tyler Wakefield of the BioFi Project are two of the most well-known leaders in this contemporary movement, developing and sharing the frameworks necessary for bringing our economic systems back down to a relational, human scale.
Please join us at Saint James Place in Great Barrington, MA on November 22nd at 3PM for the 45th Annual E.F. Schumacher Lecture, “The Promise of Bioregional Economies.” Samantha and Tyler will deliver a joint lecture grounded in their influential BioFi work, followed by a Q&A facilitated by Alex Forrester, Schumacher board member and Co-Founder of Rising Tide Capital.
Tickets are sliding scale starting at $5. Registration is for in-person attendance only — a video recording of the lecture will be circulated to all Schumacher Center newsletter subscribers in the week following the event.
