John Chettleborough
John Chettleborough is Agriculture and Markets Lead with Practical Action, the NGO set up by Fritz Schumacher in 1966 (originally called the Intermediate Technology Development Group). His current portfolio of work focuses on how to use markets and enterprise to support locally led regenerative agriculture in Practical Action’s focus countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. This includes participatory approaches that put marginalized rural groups at the centre of market development and the integration of productive use energy into agricultural value chains to support improved production, processing and storage.
John has worked in the NGO sector, ever since first going to Nigeria as a VSO volunteer in 1994. Since then he has managed a conservation research programme in Tanzania, set up a new country programme in Nigeria for Christian Aid, led a team running agricultural development programmes for Oxfam and managed consultancies and programmes covering agricultural markets and energy in Africa and Asia. He has an MSc in Environmental Management from the University of Stirling and lives in rural Oxfordshire where he is active in supporting local food markets and climate activism.
